Telecommuting
Project Manager (WASH. DC AREA ONLY!)
You know you want to telecommute. You've been reading
Dilbert for years, you have no patience with the corporate world, and
what you really want is to manage projects, write documents, and make
the world a better place, from your home, in your bathrobe. Or you have
kids - little ones - and you want to spend time with them. Or you're
retired but are bored out of your skull, and you were a crack C programmer
in your day.
Turner Consulting Group is seeking a full-time project
manager to work with clients and TCG staff to lead the creation of additional
award-winning Web applications. This is a W-2/W-4 position, not a 1099
or contract position.
A TCG project manager is the liaison between TCG and
the client, managing the relationship on a day-to-day basis and keeping
both sides informed about changes in desires, wishes, and possibilities.
It is the project manager's job to understand what the client wants
(even when the client is unsure) and to convey that to the programmers,
interfacers, documenters, and quality-assurance staff at TCG -- and
to make sure that the client's needs are met by the TCG product.
The job involves face to face communication, a great
deal of written communication, and all electronic forms of communication,
so the Project Manager needs to be facile with all of them. The project
manager is ultimately accountable for the success of the project, and
is given the responsibility needed to succeed. Because TCG is not a
top-down organization, negotiation skills are often needed in project
development.
As most TCG clients are in the Washington, D.C. area,
Project Managers should also be in the Washington, D.C. area to be available
to meet with them a few times a week. However, Project Managers -- like
all TCG employees -- work from home, so when you are not meeting with
clients you control where you work and what you do. (TCG employees are
hourly, and are limited to working a maximum of 40 hours a week.)
TCG project managers are expected to have many of the
following skills and experience:
* indicates a requirement; others are optional
- good communication skills *
- a clue about Web-site development *
- facility with picking up buzzwords like "solutions,"
"tasking," and "OOP" and the ability to explain a project without
using any of them *
- ability to read fine print, read from a computer
monitor, review documents, use a keyboard, dial a telephone, and sit
for extended periods in meetings and at the computer without falling
asleep *
- ability to communicate effectively and prudently
by e-mail *
- ability to write successful proposals
- a track record in establishing priorities,
meeting deadlines, and managing a team in a complicated task
- experience in resource planning and keeping
a project on budget
- understanding of risk management, problem
solving, change requests, and project scope
- experience writing technical specifications,
including database schemas and script specs
- experience with large projects as a developer,
architect, or project leader
- knowledge of psychology
- knowledge of usability testing
- experience in testing and quality-assurance
- knowledge of HTML or programming (particularly
C, Perl, and SQL)
- knowledge of servers, software, and security
on the Web
- understanding of design, coding, testing,
integration and implementation of Web applications
- a degree in engineering, computer science,
information systems, or telecommunications
- a graduate degree in any of the above, or
an MBA
- knowledge of Windows, MacOS, NT, MSProject,
Excel, or UNIX
It is also important to be able to laugh at yourself.
